In the chartered cities, major structural work requires the Guild's certification and inspection, and a building bearing the Guild's '''seam mark''' carries its structural guarantee for the lifetime of the master mason who signed it. The Guild also holds the power to '''condemn''' an unsafe building outright — a power city governments resent and cannot easily override.<br />
