Slate has known no other home than the Ponty ranch. His mother was hired to work in the Ponty house when he was just a babe in arms, and he grew up playing and being schooled with the Ponty children, and the children of other ranch employees. Slate's mother, Jewel, died of consumption when he was only five years old. Since Jewel had no other family, and Mrs. Ponty had a heart of gold, Slate stayed on as a "hand." Eager to do his part, Slate took becoming a good hand very seriously. By the time he was twelve, he could rope and ride as well as a grown man, and was very nearly the size of one. Now, at nineteen, he is the strongest and one of the most competent hands in Mr. Ponty's employ.
