The Stonemasons Guild is the oldest continuously operating guild in the Free Cities, the authority on masonry, engineering, quarrying, and structural survey. In the chartered cities, major structural work requires the Guild's certification and inspection, and a building bearing the Guild's seam mark carries its structural guarantee for the lifetime of the master mason who signed it. The Guild also holds the power to condemn an unsafe building outright — a power city governments resent and cannot easily override.
Members rise from Splitter through Dresser, Setter, and Master Mason to the Seam-Readers, beneath the guild's single head, the Keystone. Its central doctrine, the True Seam — that all stone has a grain and must be worked with it — is quietly borrowed from dwarven tradition and the teaching of Durroch. It shares with the followers of Calleth a deep philosophy of grain and patience.
