Came out west to California in 1849 with his wife and kids, like so many others, to prospect for gold. He made just enough money back then that he was able to start a supply business, and leave the prospecting to others. His kids eventually grew up and moved away to prospects of their own. He moved his business to San Fransisco, but found he didn't care for the "big city life" much.
