Aurora worked as a programmer for ~10 years at a Chicago satellite-office for "a respectable software company," MetaCortex. Competition for promotion and financial improvement was always fierce, and she was too shy to be any good at it. Somewhat recently, her long-time boyfriend, also a partner in the programming side-business they built together for extra cash, suddenly skipped out of town with her best-friend to who-knows-where. She was left lost in the corporate rat-maze without the emotional energy to continue, and had retreated inward, until the fateful day she received the notice that she had been accepted by lottery for immigration to [[:Category:Terra Nova Colony|Terra Nova]], coincidentally, on the same day a coworker was arrested for "virtually every computer crime we have a law for."
