Henry James MacKenzie was born in Scotland in 1830. His father was a physician, and Henry was raised and educated with the expectation he would take over his father's country practice. When his education was complete, he defied his father's wishes and moved to Philadelphia to establish his practice. He exchanged letters with his mother and two sisters back in Scotland, but his father's grudge lasted until his death.
+
The only survivor of his tribe when US Cavalry rode in and slaughtered everyone. Some nights he has nightmares, resulting from the trauma of that experience and he rarely sleeps soundly, often woken by the slightest sound.

When war broke out with the confederacy, Henry enlisted as a surgeon for the Union. When the war ended, Henry felt he has seen too many horrors to return to Philadelphia and resume his practice. Instead, he sold everything and took a stage west. He drifted from town to town, spending money in establishments reputable and not, getting into and out of many kinds of trouble.
+
Was found, near death, as a young boy by an English rancher name James Fletcher. James took in Chavez and taught him to read, write, work the ranch, and gentleman’s art of boxing. James said that because of who you are (Native American), you will be challenged more often and you should always be able to defend yourself if the need arises.

Finally, he put down roots when he saw the "for sale" sign in the window of the Henryville barber shop in 1771. It was a town he had returned to a number of times and found charming. It seemed as good a place as any, and barbering seemed like a trade more suited to his post war temperament than doctoring. He couldn't escape his oath, though. He was the town barber, but everyone called him, "Doc MacKenzie." His medical bag was needed as often as his scissors. The young sheriff occasionally called upon Doc to serve as his deputy when an extra degree of educated wisdom, or at least the appearance of it, was called for.
+
When Chavez was 19, James died after suffering nearly a year with tuberculosis. Having no other family James had willed everything to Chavez. When the bank foreclosed and sold ranch, Chavez was left with $5000 and the clothes on his back.

Chavez has a small river stone with the carved depiction of a coyote. This is the only possession he has from his life before James. He remembers his father telling him “the coyote is a trickster, impetuous and foolish. He is frequently killed by his own recklessness, but always comes back to life afterwards because his heart and spirit are strong.” Chavez has taken this to mean, no matter what troubles you find yourself in, you should never give up.

Notes

The only survivor of his tribe when US Cavalry rode in and slaughtered everyone. Some nights he has nightmares, resulting from the trauma of that experience and he rarely sleeps soundly, often woken by the slightest sound.
