Noemi arrived in town in '77, a few months ago, with a man she would identify as her cousin (who speaks even less English that she does). They bought a small plot on the edge of town limits, parked their gypsy-wagon there, and built a simple shack-and-garden. The townsfolk welcomed them as warmly as they could, but the pair kept their distance, Noemi doing most of the talking for them both. The inevitable rumors spread. She later made it known that she would read fortunes for a small fee, which earned Noemi a wary eye and occasional cautionary remark from the Reverend, but in secret, some of the townsfolk did avail themselves of her services. She often imparts wisdom from the Old World via her long-dead Grandmother's tales—she's careful not to reveal that she still speaks with her via mediumship, except to a trusted few. The day of Chipeta's (overnight) kidnapping, she went around to several of the prominent town leaders and attempted to convince them that "something bad was about to happen" and that they should exercise extreme caution, but her warning was all but forgotten by the morning.
