Ben was a bit of a child-prodigy, being accepted to Oxford a bit under-aged, to participate in their archaeology/paleoarchaeology programs and the like. He was a rising star, and was credited with several key discoveries. But as he transitioned into professional life as a young academic, he found it difficult to balance out all the responsibilities he had taken on, to the point he was getting a bit burned out. When the Fracture was discovered, he was among the few allowed to see the data being returned and study it—an additional burden to carry. He applied early to transition to Terra Nova, but his medical evaluation uncovered some damage caused by an over-reliance on stimulants, and it took him some years to "clean up" before he was deemed fit to immigrate. It was a joyous day that he got the good news—he would finally be able to study the Cretaceous as the "present" rather than the distant past.
