Cousin to King Cunedda, he was named for their paternal grandfather and rules the Cantrefi of Dunoding, which was originally intended for the king's son, Dunoda. When his son fell in battle against the Irish, Cunedda was forced to designate Padern as the chief due to internal kingdom politics.
