Background
His parents were farmer-colonists who left(fled?) Asim when he was very young; he remembers very little of his homeworld. They ended up in the Imperial client-state of Vorito where they made-do at various careers.
Starting at 18, he served two terms in the Imperial Navy as an enlisted maintenance crewman, aboard [ships]. Into his second term, at the rank of Petty Officer, he testified in a court-martial hearing against a former superior who was convicted of corruption and subsequently demoted. As a result, no officers wanted him in their department, and he continued to be given shit-assignments, and was passed over for promotions until he finally mustered-out, having had quite enough of it.
After the Navy he signed on with [Company] as a merchant-crewman, hoping to make some money and save up for a nice retirement, or maybe start a business of his own. While he's been recognized and promoted to department head for his expertise, the money hasn't exactly been rollin' in. Property taxes back home keep going up, so he had to sell his place just to break even; now he's got nothing left but what he's carried with him on the ship.
