High King ("‘Riothamus") of Prydain. Considered by pretty much everyone to be a duplicitous, conniving jackass who murdered the previous high king and invited the Saecsens under Hengist to Prydain to help him fend off the Picts from the northern in 449 Anno Domini. Two years ago (454 A.D.), he ceased paying Hengist, which has resulted in the current crisis situation. Since then, he has played the various factions off each other, although as of 456 A.D., the lords of Prydain have had enough and are trending toward open revolt. In a desperate attempt to offset this threat, King Vortigern has promised his daughter, Gwenhwyfar, to Artorius Aurelianus, son of Prydain's War Dux, Ambrosius Aurelianus, effectively declaring Artos to be his nominal heir.
Of course, he's slithered out of more difficult positions during the years of his reign.
