Khazdrakar Mines is the great mining-hold of the dwarven kingdoms and the chief source of the ore, metal, and fine stone that feed Mott Caridin's craft. It is not a city-kingdom in its own right but a hold subordinate to Mott Caridin, governed under the preeminent king's authority and worked by the craft houses and labour of the dwarves who live within it.

Its galleries descend in worked terraces deeper than daylight has ever reached. The deeper galleries reach toward the old places of the mountain, which is reason enough, to a dwarf, for the hold to be watched as closely as it is worked.
