Notes
Born on Raweh in the Five Sisters subsector of the Spinward Marches, Ibrahim (or "Abe" as he prefers) never quite fit in. His family (with the exception of his mother) were all quite devout, descendants of the now extinct Reformed Submissionist sect of Islam who had become fundamentalist proponents of Raweh's dominant religion: the Church of the Golden Sand. Although he was expected to follow in the footsteps of his family, Ibrahim instead wanted to explore strange new worlds, to boldly go where he had not gone before ... so yeah, he was born into the wrong sci-fi universe.
When he was seven, Ibrahim stumbled onto his chance to escape. On a dare from one of his many brothers, Ibrahim sneaked into the Imperium naval base but, rather than steal something as his brothers expected, he stowed aboard a free trader named Rubicon. They were off-planet and in Jumpspace before Ibrahim's presence was discovered.
Fortunately for him, the captain decided against treating him harshly and instead appointed him "Ship's Boy." He earned no share of profits and was little more than a servant or even an especially well-treated slave, but to Ibrahim, it was the adventure he had sought out.
Before the year was out, Ibrahim had become invaluable to the ship's physician, an old woman name Beth who should have retired decades earlier, and she soon adopted him as both an apprentice and a surrogate grandson. In him, she discovered a worthy student and he devoured her lessons and, by fourteen, knew more about medicine than most professionally trained doctors!
Beth passed shortly after Ibrahim turned eighteen, but by that point, he had already unofficially replaced her as the crew's primary care physician. Unfortunately, he was beginning to rub the crew the wrong way. Not because he was incompent, but rather because he possessed more raw talent than all of them, including the captain (they were merely NPCs, after all, and simply part of his PC Backstory.) The crew of the Rubicon, it turned out, were not especially nice people, and Ibrahim's good nature was a constant reminder of their own shortcomings. While he was not oblivious to these tensions, Ibrahim - or Abe as he was now called - didn't know how to cool the tempers and began considering leaving the vessel that had been his home for most of his life.
Destiny called, as the bridge crew of the Rubiconfound themselves on the wrong end of several less than legal escapades with crime bosses on one of the many worlds they visited - Ibrahim never learned where it was and did not actively try to find out. The resulting firefight cost the crew their commanding officer, their chief engineer and would have claimed their helmsman had it not been for Ibrahim's mad medical skills.
Despite the damage done to the vessel, they managed to limp back to Bevey where Ibrahim used the forged documents (provided to him by the Rubicon's very talented quartermaster) that identified him as a graduate of a small offworld Medical Academy to obtain work with another starship, one that does not have so many bad memories. Unfortunately for him, that ship turned out to be the Titanic VII.
Now, he just wants to get out there to experience the awe and wonder and terror of space...
UPDATE: In the six months on Risek, Ibrahim found himself "recruited" by a shadowy, nameless organization he knows only as the Agency who knew he was a latent psi (thanks to Sae, but Ibrahim doesn't know that part yet.) Faced with a prison for simply existing, a life on psionic-suppressant drugs that also have physiological repercussions, or service with the Agency, Ibrahim grimly opted for the lesser of evils and spent the next half year learning to actually use the abilities he had only just started to realize he possessed. Now, he's effectively a probationary agent for the mysterious organization despite not quite understanding what it is they get out of having him be an operative since he's just a doctor!
