Background
Born in Motor City to a single mom, Jamal grew up in a very poor household in an equally crappy neighborhood. He already had three sisters when he was born and, like so many other young boys without a father figure in his life, he ended up in a small gang that pulled the kinds of petty crime that Motor City is notorious for. With several fledgling hackers (Jamal was one of them), his gang began leaning into small-time cybercrimes. As a lark, they hacked into what they thought was a legit bloodbank and, armed with that information, stole several thousand dollars. Jamal thought they covered their tracks. He was wrong.
The vampires visited his family first and then, when they were done there, came for the gang. In the chaos of their onslaught, Jamal tried to flee but something shattered his back. His last memory was of a young white dude wearing an old timey suit getting out of an equally old car, looking at him before drawing an honest to God sword...
When he woke up, he was somewhere else. All of his injuries had mysteriously healed and the white dude was there. This guy introduced himself as Nathaniel Hawthorne and revealed that both of them were Immortal. They had inside of them the blood of kings. They had no rivals. No man could be their equals.
It has been more five years since that day. Nathaniel - he never went by Nate or Nathan; always Nathaniel - trained Jamal hard, both to use his sword and to harness the Quickening. And now Jamal is back in Motor City. He knows vampires are real. They're real and they killed his mom and his sisters and his friends. So, he's going to kill them. All of them.
