Mason is a veteran EMT from the San Angeles area, serving for ~20 years, that's "seen the elephant" a little too much in the ERs and on the streets there—the worst of humanity, and their sufferings. Then the corporation he worked for decided to drum up some barely-legal excuse to let him go, to avoid paying his growing salary and/or his eventual retirement, in favor of some cheaper, fresh-meat. When Hope Plaza re-opened in 2150, he applied for the next Pilgrimage under "needed skills," and was eventually accepted for the Terra Nova medical department. He looked forward to helping aid the living and growing, rather than playing hospice-nurse to a dying world—but the damage to his psyche had already been done.
