The Grey Order is the pre-eminent arcane institution of the Free Cities — and, despite the company it keeps, a secular one. It does not teach magic and it is not a temple; it recognises practitioners who already have the craft, validates their methods, controls access to its archive networks, and preserves the research its members are bound to submit within a year of completing it.
One does not apply to the Grey Order. One is recognised by it, rising by demonstrated contribution from Observed through Recognised, Annotator, and Reader to the Senior Readers who lead each Registry. There is no single head of the Order.
Its customs are steeped in the philosophy of Sulé, goddess of knowledge — but the devotional worship of Sulé belongs to a separate body, The Unfinished Hand, and the two should not be confused. It keeps a wary rivalry with the Quiet Ledger and a cooler one with the Greenward Fellowship.
