The Principal of the Western Marches is the elected regional authority responsible for the Free Cities-chartered settlements of the Western Marches — their roads, border defence, recognised towns, and inter-town disputes. The Principal is elected by the registered citizens of the region's recognised settlements and confirmed by the Council, and sits at the Principal's Hall in Ashford.
The office carries a separate advisory regional voice on the Council, not a full city vote. The crisis in the Marches has left the Principal with far less to govern than the office once commanded, but its authority over the region as a whole remains real if diminished.
