The Team™ were contractors assembled, sorta GI Joe-style from various careers/disciplines, by The Company™, to conduct The Operation™ (wherever that took them) wherein they killed a bunch of people for…reasons. After the last mission together, the Operation™ was completed (successfully or not) and the Team™ was disbanded, after which everyone went their separate ways, until their Company liaison, Dungeonmaster, died, and they all got back together to see him off properly (Redacted 3).

After the incident during the cruise, the Company decided to reactivate the Team for one more mission…
