Claudia grew up on the streets of Brest, France. She doesn't remember much about her family, having lost them at the age of seven. For safety and survival she was coerced into an organization of children forced to beg and steal money. Which they brought it back their money-hungry leader every night. Her hotspot for begging was down by the docks and near the bars where sailors always come in and like to see an innocent face. All the while learning to fight for her keep against older girls and even stronger boys. At some point she came across a more kindly French sailor, whom after catching her trying to steal from him, decided to take mercy on her, and for a time became her de facto guardian for a time.
Philip taught her how to fight with knives and sticks, tools that were easy to come by. Besides, youth weren't harassed for carrying a couple of sticks with them. However, one day when she returned to see him, Philip's home was ransacked and he gone. This left Claudia once again, alone.
At about fifteen years old, she decided to cut her hair, dressing as a boy, and to pretend to be a sailor. Having learned much of the basics of ship handling from the company she begged from around the docks, and a bit more from Philip she found employ with Maurice Boissonade aboard the La Dame Blanche. Along the way she learns and practices many of her skills, further impressing many of the more hardened sailors at her ability to defend herself.
One evening prior to docking in Jamacia, she overhears the captain talking about a golden skull in his possession. Having been aboard Maurice's ship for the many months he took to cross the ocean and the various ports of call along the way, Claudia came to greatly dislike the snob of a man. Seeing an opportunity upon reaching Kingston, she slipped into Maurice's suite, and stole the golden skull and left the ship and crew in her wake. Later having slipped her crew and itching to be off the island, she encounters Randel and the crew of the [ Beowulf ] recruiting, and the rest is where her story begins...
