Notes

Henry James MacKenzie was born in Scotland in 1830. His father was a physician, and Henry was raised and educated with the expectation he would take over his father's country practice. When his education was complete, he defied his father's wishes and moved to Philadelphia to establish his practice. He exchanged letters with his mother and two sisters back in Scotland, but his father's grudge lasted until his death.

When war broke out with the confederacy, Henry enlisted as a surgeon for the Union. When the war ended, Henry felt he has seen too many horrors to return to Philadelphia and resume his practice. Instead, he sold everything and took a stage west. He drifted from town to town, spending money in establishments reputable and not, getting into and out of many kinds of trouble.

Finally, he put down roots when he saw the "for sale" sign in the window of the Henryville barber shop in 1771. It was a town he had returned to a number of times and found charming. It seemed as good a place as any, and barbering seemed like a trade more suited to his post war temperament than doctoring. He couldn't escape his oath, though. He was the town barber, but everyone called him, "Doc MacKenzie." His medical bag was needed as often as his scissors. The young sheriff occasionally called upon Doc to serve as his deputy when an extra degree of educated wisdom, or at least the appearance of it, was called for.
