Notes
Haruki was born a runt. He was never the biggest or strongest among his peers. He remembers meeting Gestlin for the first time when he was just a boy. He loved hearing Gestlin talk of all the adventures he had been on. He really liked the tales of Rainald the Giant and his mighty hammer. He would imagine himself as Rainald, wading through waves of foes. But he was distressed, he was not ever to be a big man.
One evening, he approached Master Gestlin while he was relaxing outside his magnificent wagon. He implored Gestlin to speak more of Sir Rainald and Gestlin easily relented the request of the youth. Once again, he spun many tales of Rainald's exploits. As excited to hear these tales Haruki became visibly disappointed, and Gestlin noticed. Gestlin asked what was wrong, and Haruki spoke of his jealousy of the other kids and how they were destined to become samurai and he not. Gestlin, being Gestlin, felt sympathy for the youth, and he did something he probably shouldn't have. He promised Haruki that he should not worry, and that Haruki would indeed grow big and strong, and maybe one day even rival the vary strength of Rainald the Mighty. To sell it he waved Smil-Blam over the youth, and tapped him with the rod of wondrous power. Little did he know that he had actually activated the magic within, and Haruki would be forever changed--for he did grow.
Because of his size and strength Haruki decided that mastery of the tetsubo would be his ambition. After his family’s honor was restored, thanks to Master Gestlin, he was admitted into one of the prestigious fighting dojos in Suhad. Years into his schooling the school was attacked and everyone was killed. Haruki escaped death, as he was out fetching water. He was found alone among the bodies, and some accused him of treason, and other cowardice. His fault was purely innocent, but many wanted to blame someone for the tragedy. Many suggested he restore his honor by seppuku, but Haruki refused, he knew he was innocent, and chose exile instead.
With nowhere to go and no one willing to believe him he traveled south. He knew Gestlin had returned to Caithness, and knew the old man would believe him. He also knew his boyhood hero would be there, the Mighty Rainald. He would seek his own fortune and glory, and one day maybe stories would one day be written of his exploits.
